Backun Protégé Wooden Clarinet

The Backun Protégé Clarinet is a premium wooden step-up clarinet designed for accomplished students and advancing players who are looking for greater tonal depth, response and refinement. Backun describes it as its “ultimate step-up” model, positioned as a pathway towards tertiary study or as a high-quality instrument for experienced teachers.

Premium Wooden Construction

The Protégé is available in premium unstained, naturally aged grenadilla or cocobolo, using the same grade of wood Backun uses for its professional and custom clarinets. Its poly-cylindrical bore and undercut tone holes contribute to an even response, good intonation and greater tonal flexibility across the instrument.

It also features drop-forged hardened keywork with triple-strike silver plating, custom black leather pads and an adjustable thumb rest with neck-strap ring. A New Traditional 65mm Barrel and Backun Bell are supplied with the instrument.

Designed for the Advancing Player

As players progress, differences in tone, resistance and response become increasingly important. The Protégé gives the developing musician greater scope to explore tone colour, projection, dynamics and musical expression, while providing the refined feel expected from a more advanced wooden clarinet.

Compare Before You Choose

Every wooden clarinet has its own character. At Tempest Music, we recommend play-testing the Backun Protégé alongside other wooden clarinets within your budget and comparing tone, response, resistance and keywork rather than choosing from specifications alone.

Through a guided comparison, it can become surprisingly clear which clarinet allows you to produce the sound you are looking for most easily.
