Pearl 505EU Curved Head Student Flute

The Pearl 505EU Curved Head Flute is designed for younger players who are not yet large enough to comfortably reach the keys of a standard straight-head flute. Its U-shaped curved headjoint reduces the reach required, allowing a smaller child to begin learning on a quality Pearl flute with a more comfortable posture. Pearl specifically designed the 505EU for younger players.

Designed for Younger Players

A young beginner should not have to stretch excessively simply to hold their instrument. The curved headjoint brings the keywork within easier reach, making the 505EU particularly useful for children who are not yet ready for a full-size straight-head flute.

The playing position is different from the Jupiter Waveline design. With the Pearl’s traditional U-shaped curved headjoint, the flute body sits further away from the player, whereas the Waveline design maintains the flute more closely in the same plane as a standard full-size flute.

Neither approach is automatically better for every child. This is one reason we prefer to individually size younger players and let them try the different options.

Pearl Quality in a Smaller-Player Flute

The 505EU is part of Pearl’s Quantz 505 Series and has a silver-plated nickel-silver construction, covered keys, offset G, C footjoint and Split E mechanism. The Split E is designed to make the third-octave E easier and more stable to produce.

Importantly, Pearl has not treated this simply as a basic children’s flute. The 505 series incorporates Pearl’s Pinless Mechanism and One-Piece Core-Bar, features designed to improve mechanical reliability and durability.

Ready for the Transition to a Straight Flute

The 505 series has been designed with the child’s growth in mind. Pearl provides a pathway from the U-shaped headjoint to a standard straight headjoint as the player’s reach develops. Pearl also notes that the 505EU case is ready to accommodate the straight headjoint when required.

This can allow the player to continue using the same flute body rather than necessarily replacing the entire instrument when they become ready for a standard playing position.
